Chemical and mechanical root canal debridement are the primary methods used in endodontic therapy to remove all dead tissue, bacteria, and microbial byproducts from the canal. Sodium hypochlorite, a powerful organic tissue dissolver with a broad spectrum of antibacterial properties, is an excellent choice for disinfecting surfaces. Chelating agents, on the other hand, may be used to remove the inorganic components found on the smear layer. This irrigation method is capable of removing the smear layer; however, it is less effective in the apical third. While using irrigant activation devices, irrigating solutions need to be in direct contact with the whole root canal wall surfaces, especially in the apical portions of tiny root canals. The role of irrigants is extremely important because they help not only to clean the canal but also to allow the seepage of the medicaments into the canal system. Thus, the canal needs to be healthy before the obturation procedure. Nowadays, many irrigants have been studied and hence compilation of the various available sources and their effect has to be studied both in vivo and in vitro . The correlation between the irrigants and the canal cleanliness is of utmost importance, as the success of endodontic root canal treatment depends on its proper activation and characteristics. Hence, this review incorporates the current use of various irrigating solutions and their advantages and disadvantages. In the future, endodontists may employ the novel irrigants and irrigant activation devices that were discovered in this study.

Aim: To compare the efficiency of sonic irrigation, passive ultrasonic irrigation, and conventional syringe irrigation (CI) in removing pure and injectable calcium hydroxide (CH) from the root canals of mandibular second premolars by measuring the probable microleakage of residual CH particles in root canal obturation using computerized liquid filtration (CLF). Materials and Methods: Eighty instrumented mandibular second premolars were categorized into three experimental groups (n = 20 each) based on the irrigation method used for removing CH and a control group (n = 20) in which CH was not used. Each experimental group was divided into two equal groups (pure and injectable CH). After 1 week, CH was removed from the root canals, and the teeth were obturated. CLF measurements were performed 1 week after obturation. Nonparametric variables between two groups were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test, and the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare more than two groups. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results: All experimental groups showed higher leakage values than the control group. The highest leakage values were evident in the CI group, and the lowest leakage values were found in the sonic (EDDY) irrigation group. No significant differences were detected among the different forms of CH. Conclusions: None of the analyzed techniques could completely remove CH from root canals, resulting in higher leakage values. Sonic irrigation with EDDY was the best in removing CH from root canals.

Aim: The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the efficacy of newly developed irrigation systems, i.e., XP-endo Finisher file (XP-endo), EndoActivator (EA), and Endo-Irrigator Plus (EI) with gold standard passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) tip and in removal of calcium hydroxide (CH) from single-rooted teeth with artificial simulated internal resorption cavities. Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty single-rooted mandibular premolars were decoronated and prepared using the ProTaper Gold system up to F5. Samples were buccolingually sectioned and resorption cavities were prepared. Twenty specimens were served as Group 1 – negative control. In the remaining specimens, CH was delivered and root halves were brought together. Twenty specimens were served as Group 2 – positive control. The remaining specimens were randomly divided into four experimental groups ( n = 20), where NaOCl and EDTA were activated using PUI, XP-endo, EA, and EI for 1 min. The remnants of CH were scored and analyzed by employing Kruskal–Wallis H- and Mann–Whitney U-tests. Results: PUI and XP-endo removed more CH than other devices ( P < 0.05), showing no significant difference between them. Conclusion: None of the tested systems were able to remove CH completely from resorption cavities. PUI and XP-endo were superior to other tested devices.
