Effect of Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty on Positional Dependency in Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Abstract

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is successful treatment for obstructive events occurring in the lateral sleep position, especially in patients without positional dependency. This implies that patients who have become position dependent may benefit from positional therapy after UPPP.

Outcomes and Predictors of Success Following Multilevel Surgery in Positional and Nonpositional Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Changes in site of obstruction in obstructive sleep apnea patients according to sleep position: A DISE study

“…We suggest that OSA patients who have TB obstruction or retrolingual obstruction without severe LW collapse are ultimately likely to be PD. In a previous study, we have shown that uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UP3) can change NPD patients into PD patients, rendering them candidates for positional therapy . This is in accordance with the results of our current study; UP3 can reduce LW collapsibility and thus decrease lateral AHI, rendering these patients PD.…”
