Effect of Ultraviolet Radiation, Smoking and Nutrition on Hair

Abstract: Similar to the rest of the skin, the hair is exposed to noxious environmental factors. While ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and smoking are well appreciated as major factors contributing to the extrinsic aging of the skin, their effects on the condition of hair have only lately attracted the attention of the medical community. Terrestrial solar UVR ranges from approximately 290 to 400 nm; UV-B (290-315 nm) reaches only the upper dermis, while the penetration of UV-A (315-400 nm) into the dermis increases with wav… Show more

“…Extrinsic hair aging induced by oxygen free radicals generated by ultraviolet radiation, air pollution, and smoking results in an increase in fiber porosity, loss of mechanical strength, and an increase in surface roughness . Stress has also been implicated as one of the causal factors involved in hair loss (androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, and alopecia areata) …”

“…Protecting the scalp from the sun is paramount as ultraviolet radiation contributes to extrinsic aging of hair. Tobacco smoking also carries adverse effects on hair growth . Thus, smoking cessation counseling and education about the adverse effects of stress on hair growth and development should be emphasized .…”

“…) has been extensively studied, the effect on skin appendages, such as the hair follicle (HF), has received less attention. This is surprising considering that increased hair loss is reported in patients exposed to repeated episodes of sunburn in the scalp skin , and that phototherapy seems to be beneficial for the treatment of selected alopecias .…”
