Effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine Bufei Granule on Stable Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis Based on Existing Evidence

Abstract: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at evaluating the effect of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Bufei granule on stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We retrieved data from PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, CNKI, Wanfang, and WeiPu (VIP) for studies focusing on whether the TCM Bufei granule would be effective in treating stable COPD. No language restriction and blinding were used. All trials involved were examined based on the stan… Show more

“…Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex disease, which is often combined with other diseases [ 1 ]. Therefore, a systematic, structured, and multidisciplinary comprehensive management mode is needed in the stable stage of COPD to provide continuous health monitoring for patients, as well as comprehensive health management measures such as smoking cessation, symptom management, exercise training, psychological support, and drug treatment [ 2 ]. For patients with COPD in a relatively stable state, COPD is a preventable and treatable disease, which can be accompanied by some significant extrapulmonary effects, which are related to the severity of the disease.…”

“…According to the TCM theory, phlegm-heat and blood-stasis are two common pathogenic factors that can cause obstruction and impairment of lung qi, leading to the symptoms of cough, sputum, dyspnea, and wheezing. Acetylcysteine inhalation can act as a TCM drug that can resolve phlegm, clear heat, and activate blood, thus restoring the balance and harmony of the lung qi[ 34 ]. The TCM syndrome score, which is a quantitative measure of the severity and complexity of TCM syndromes, can be used as a reference for treatment selection and evaluation[ 35 ].…”

“…Currently, treatments for COPD include inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators ( 7 , 8 ). Although these treatments are effective in relieving symptoms, some side effects inevitably occur ( 9 , 10 ).…”
