Quality of life and falls in elderly people: a mixed methods study

Objective: to assess elderly people’s quality of life, understanding the social representations of falls. Methods: a convergent mixed methods research carried out at homes, with a sample of 134 elderly people. A structured questionnaire was used, covering sociodemographic variables and factors that indicated frailty and risk of falling. For quality of life assessment, Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36 and Theory of Social Representations, Abric’s structural approach were used, with data treated by dictionary of equivalent terms, processed in Evoc 2000, converging analytically according to Neuman. Results: quality of life impairment was identified in terms of physical, emotional and functional capacity. The elements of the possible central nucleus were fall, fear, and bruised-broken-bone. Final considerations: quality of life impairment can contribute to increase the number of falls, which has been shown to be an event present in elderly people’s lives through evocations. Understanding elderly people’s individual demands allows planning actions.

Objective: characterize and analyze social representations of middle-aged adults over their old age. Method: Qualitative research supported by the Theory of Social Representation. The field of study was the marginal urban jurisdiction of the Toribia Castro and San Martin Health Centers, in the Lambayeque district, in Peru. Two hundred people between 40 and 59 years old were participants in the study, 50% males and 50% females. Data was collected using the Free Word Association Technique, with the inductor term “my old age”. The data was analyzed with the EVOC 2003 software. Results: middle-aged adults generated a similar representation of their old age with the use of the following elements: disease, family, uselessness, loneliness. The concepts of protection and fear only appeared in the probable central nucleus of the representation of men, while in that of women, sadness was the one that appeared the most. Conclusion: The probable central nucleus of old age shows negative representation overall and, depending on how the person copes with it in the course of their life, the meanings assigned to it will vary. Health promotion policies that highlight self-care and communicate a positive and autonomous image of old age can contribute to reconfigure such representations.

Objective: to analyze the contents and dimensions of social representations about chemotherapy by cancer patients in chemotherapy treatment. Method: qualitative study, based on the Theory of Social Representations. One hundred patients were interviewed with cancer undergoing chemotherapy treatment attended at a High Complexity Oncology Unit located in the north of the state of Paraná between August and December of 2016. To collect data, a socio-occupational and clinical characterization questionnaire was used, a form of free evocations and in-depth interviews. The analysis was performed with the softwares Microsoft Excel and Evocations. Results: the social representation of chemotherapy has in its central core the words healing, good and difficult, which are structured in order to justify the completion of chemotherapy - good treatment that leads to healing, although difficult. In addition, an attempt is made to define chemotherapy from its effectiveness, seeking, in healing, its conceptualization. The periphery presents elements related to the attitude, efficacy and side effects of chemotherapy, which reveal the concrete experience of daily life during treatment. Conclusion: the health team, especially the nursing team, should collaborate with the representational construction of patients with cancer in chemotherapy, offering information and rescuing knowledge gaps that allow their participation in the therapeutic process.
