Effect of Tafluprost 0.0015% on Central Corneal Thickness in Patients With Primary Open-angle Glaucoma

Abstract: Long-term use of tafluprost may decrease the CCT in patients with POAG. Consequently, clinicians must be aware of prolongated CCT variations that may arise throughout the follow-up period for proper IOP targeting and management.

“…Furthermore, no significant correlation was found between CCT loss and IOP reduction in the NTG group (r = 0.16, P = 0.32), which is consistent with previous studies. 25,26 Based on Ehlers' IOP correction formula, we expected 0.61 mmHg of IOP underestimation for a CCT reduction of 8.6 mm, which accounts for 20% of the total IOP reduction (3.07 mmHg) observed after 60 months of latanoprost treatment. Presumably because the IOP-lowering effects of latanoprost exceeded the effect of CCT reduction, IOP reduction seemed not to affect CCT thinning in our study.…”

“…Prostaglandin analogue (PGA) topical drops can decrease, increase, or not affect CCT. The decrease appears to occur most significantly in the first 1-2 years of treatment and mostly in NTG patients (range: 8.6 + /−5.2 to 14.24 + /−8.18 µm) [93][94][95]. This appears reversible following cessation [96].…”

“…; Panos et al. ). The precise explanation for these changes is unknown, but it is well established that prostaglandins exert their IOP‐lowering effect by inducing extracellular matrix remodelling in key elements of the aqueous outflow system of the eye, most notably the uveoscleral pathway (Ocklind ; Kim et al.…”
