Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of Swallowing Rehabilitation Protocol (SRP) on swallowing function (SF) of esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula (EA-TEF) patients with pharyngeal swallowing disorder. In this study, 24 children with EA-TEF who had deglutitive and respiratory problems were grouped into either study ( = 12) or control group ( = 12) by basic randomization. Study group received the SRP including neuromuscular electrical stimulation, thermal tactile stimulation, and hyol… Show more

“…This thesis is consistent with the need of conservative approaches in treating clinical complications following the OA/TOF surgical repair [7]. Therefore, fascial release [27] and hyoid bone mobilization [16, 17] might have improved the impaired cervical fascial sliding and rib mobility, biomechanically supporting the diaphragmatic respiratory dynamics [37] and cervical spine [38], thus resolving the cervical somatic dysfunction [39, 40].…”

“…A body of evidence underlined the lack of a systematic treatment of nutritional complications related with OA/TOF [2] and the need for a multidisciplinary approach [14, 15]. A recent study drafted a rehabilitation protocol on swallowing function, including hyolaryngeal mobilization [16], which is a specific manual approach [17].…”

“…A total of five RCT, 9 29–32 four prospective case series (ie, before and after study with no control group) 33–36 , and one retrospective cohort study (with a control group) 37 were included in the review ( table 1 ). One RCT (Gao et al ) 30 included NMES in both treatment and control groups as well as a cointervention in the treatment group, and, therefore, was only the control group was analysed.…”

“…In addition, we were unable to obtain the required data to analyse the study by Christiaanse et al quantitatively, 37 and, therefore, this study was analysed qualitatively. Thus, four studies (four RCTs) were analysed quantitatively 9 31 32 38 and six studies were analysed qualitatively. 30 33–37…”

“…Indeed, a recent study described a swallowing rehabilitation program for patients with EA-TEF, who have pharyngeal swallowing disorders, according to the specific needs of this patient population, to address the problems of the oropharyngeal phase. 5 The chewing function is the process by which food is crushed and ground by teeth to comminute and soften the solid food. It has two stages: food-transportation stage and food-processing stage.…”
