Effect of sugars on characteristics of Boer goat semen after cryopreservation

Abstract: In order to improve Boer goat semen quality during cryopreservation process, the influence of sugar supplementation on semen characteristics of sperm were investigated. Three experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of (a) addition of two monosaccharides (fructose and glucose) and two disaccharides sugars (trehalose and sucrose) (b) sugar combination (fructose and trehalose, sucrose and trehalose, glucose and trehalose), and control (glucose without trehalose) (c) different concentrations of treh… Show more

“…In our previous studies [10,17] lactose was used for sperm cryopreservation, while other monosaccharides such as glucose, fructose and sorbitol have never been examined. The effect of type of sugar supplementation in the freezing extenders on the post-thawed semen quality has been reported in the dog [29], buck [22], bull [28], ram [1] and stallion [24]. The stallion's cryopreserved sperms utilize sorbitol in the semen extender better than fructose and glucose [24].…”

“…In humans, maximum sperm motility was observed at 1 mM [6], while the long-standing human sperm motility was improved at regular medium glucose concentration (5 mM) [12]. However, in Boer goat post-thaw semen, glucose supplementation as high as 70 mM increased sperm forward motility after cryopreservation [13]. The glucose concentration used to increase mouse sperm beat frequency was 5 mM during early hyperactivation [2].…”
