Effect of screw element type in degradation of polypropylene upon multiple extrusions

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The screw profile of a twin-screw extruder can be designed to contain kneading and conveying elements inducing different levels of degradation in the polymer melt. In this work, the level of degradation in polypropylene has been measured after multiple extrusions-for various screw profiles-using size exclusion chromatography and IR spectroscopy. The average molecular weight and the polydispersity have been reduced and the carbonyl and unsaturation indexes increase as the number of extrusions and the a… Show more

“…Absorbance in the region of 1725 cm -1 and 3500 cm -1 indicated the presence of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups (De Paoli 2008; Cáceres and Canevarolo 2009), respectively, and the absorbance peak at 2722 cm -1 was related to angular molecular vibrations in CH and axial molecular vibrations in CH 3 , as suggested elsewhere (Cáceres and Canevarolo 2009; Babetto and Canevarolo 2002; Rabello and White 1997; Garton et al 1978). Comparison of these absorbances can be used to normalize IR spectra since these peaks are insensitive to the oxidative degradation of pure polypropylene (Wang et al 2011).…”

“…This phenomenon used to make controlled rheology PP. The amount of degradation can be controlled with screw design and the amount of oxygen in the extruder [106]. The degradation of PP during processing can be well modulated [107].…”
