“…To further explore the underlying mechanisms of iron metabolism disorder in T2DM, we demonstrated iron metabolism disorder in STZ-induced diabetic rats fed with an HFD, as elucidated by the elevations in the serum ferritin and serum iron levels. These results concur with those of previous studies ( 22 , 23 , 24 ). Saravanan et al ( 23 ) showed that serum iron was increased in STZ rats, and Dogukan et al ( 17 ) reported that STZ injection following HFD intake markedly increased hepatic and serum iron levels.…”

“…These results concur with those of previous studies. [22][23][24] Saravanan et al [23] showed that serum iron was increased in STZ rats, and Dogukan et al [17] reported that STZ injection following HFD intake markedly increased hepatic and serum iron levels. There is little consensus on the underlying mechanisms of iron metabolism disorders in T2DM.…”

“…STZ-induced elevation of iron storage was also observed in the proximal tubular lysosomes (27), myocardium (28), and artery (29), while studies of Silva et al (30) and Saravanan et al (31) showed that serum iron was increased in STZ rats. Additionally, Dogukan et al (32) reported that STZ injection following HFD induction markedly increased the hepatic and serum iron levels.…”

“…Saravanan and colleagues have shown that oral administration of S -Allyl cysteine (SAC) treatment at 150 mg/kg bw for 45 days reduced fasting blood glucose (FBG) by 65%, ameliorated oxidative damages, glycosuria and improved the activities of glucose metabolizing enzymes in STZ-diabetic rats (Saravanan et al, 2009 , 2010 , 2013 ; Saravanan and Ponmurugan, 2010 , 2011 , 2012a , b ). Oral supplementation of SAC (0.5–1.0 g/l) for 4 or 10 weeks showed 34% more FBG reduction compared to n -acetyl cysteine, S -ethyl cysteine, S -methyl cysteine, and S -propyl cysteine (<30% FBG reduction) in STZ-induced Balb/cA mice (Hsu et al, 2004 ; Mong and Yin, 2012 ).…”
