Effect of pilot fuel quantity and type on performance and emissions of natural gas and hydrogen based combustion in a compression ignition engine

Abstract: Natural gas and hydrogen have been extensively tested in dual fuel mode in a compression ignition engine. Many studies conclude that the emissions, especially those oxides of nitrogen (NO X ) are expected to form in the region around the pilot spray where high temperatures exist and the equivalence ratio is close to stoichiometric. The effect of changing the pilot fuel quantity has not been widely reported. This study investigates the effect of changing pilot fuel quantity, and type and the effect of this chang… Show more

“…In the paper [6], the effect of the pilot fuel mass of a dual-fuel engine working on gas-diesel mode on the combustion process and emissions was experimentally defined. It was investigated that an increase in the pilot fuel mass leads to a decrease in combustion delay and an increase in the amount of NO x emissions.…”

“…An early reignition pilot is favourable for faster ignition and combustion process [9]. A dual fuel CNG injection decreases the thermal efficiency slightly when compared to the full diesel injection as shown is study [10][11].…”

“…There are many types of gas fuel, such as natural gas and petroleum gas. In the storage and distribution of natural gas consists of two forms, namely, compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) [4]- [6]. Compressed natural gas (CNG) is an alternative fuel besides gasoline or diesel [7].…”
