Abstract: In laboratory experiments samples of natural or chloroform‐fumigated soils were inoculated with an Alcaligenes xylosoxidans subsp. denitrificans which is able to use 2,4‐dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4‐D) as a sole carbon source. Biotic factors affecting survival and activity of the inoculant were determined. In natural soil the numbers and activity of Alc. xylosoxidans declines in few days.
