“…In the present study, despite the average concentration of retinol in the maternal serum indicating adequacy and being compatible with the literature (23)(24)(25)(26) , a substantial part of the maternal population presented VAD, highlighting an important risk to the health of women and their infants. To evaluate the VA status in neonates, there is a predominant number of studies in the literature that use <0.7 µmol L À1 as the cut-off point to indicate a low retinol concentration (11,(27)(28)(29)(30)(31) , and this value was also adopted as the cut-off point in the present study.…”

“…This vitamin is essential for human growth and development, in addition to its contribution to the proper functioning of the immune system (particularly in the defense against infections) and its vital action in preserving vision acuity. On the other hand, vitamin A deficiency can lead to several disorders such as xerophthalmia, susceptibility to infections, anemia, and night blindness in childhood, as well as low resistance to infections (Grilo and others ).…”

“…A study conducted by Grilo et al 20 used retinyl palmitate as a mean of supplementing, evaluating its effect on the retinol concentration in the colostrum before and after supplementation and in fasting and postprandial conditions. There was a higher concentration of retinol after supplementation (14.7%) and after meal (43.8%).…”

“…Moreover, some papers reflect on the relevance of maternal supplementation front the breast milk, which is considered the main food for the kids. Bezerra et al 19 and Grilo et al 20 used retinyl palmitate as a form of supplementation, finding in their studies increase of retinol concentration in the colostrum and in the mature milk. In breast milk, vitamin A is present in the form of a retinyl ester, the main one being the retinyl palmitate 23 .…”
