Effect of low-level LASER and neural mobilization on nociceptive threshold in experimental sciatica

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There are few studies in the literature especially reporting the effects of LASER associated to neural mobilization for sciatica. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of low-level LASER with wavelength of 830 nm and fluency of 4 J/cm 2 , of neural mobilization and of their association to decrease pain. METHODS:Sample was made up of 28 Wistar female rats, separated in four groups: G1 (placebo); G2 (neural mobilization); G3 (LASER); G4 (neural mobilization and LASER), being that a… Show more

“…The results found by Gonçalves et al 31 showed that therapy with laser application of 830 nm, 4 J/cm² for 14 days contributed to the decrease in the inflammatory process triggered by the compressing injury of the sciatic nerve. 28 This is in accordance with the findings from this study, in a way that an improvement on the TNIG inflammatory process could be observed, as the laser acts as a regulator of the micro medium and provides a nerve regeneration in an effective way. 32 Also, as observed in this study, the presence of integral fibers, presents mostly shorter diameters lengthin the treated groups.…”

“…EV2 and EV3 presented a lower nociceptive threshold, which means that there was no improvement on those animals submitted to the DP and treated, while the DP seemed not to have played any influence on this parameter. Similar results were found in the study by Karvat et al, 28 in which, after the compression of the sciatic nerve, LLL treatment of 830 nm 4 J/cm², and neural mobilization, they could draw a significant difference between the EV1 (higher nociceptive threshold) and the others, concluding that the used protocol was not efficient to change the nociceptive threshold.…”

“…The treatment with neural mobilization was performed on the same days of LLLT and the technique was always applied by the same person. 20 The G4 group received both neural mobilization and LLLT therapies, in this order, as described above and always in the right hind limb.…”

“…Dessa maneira, para realização do teste no local da lesão, o animal foi contido manualmente e a ponta do filamento foi aplicada perpendicularmente à área da incisão cirúrgica, exercendo-se uma força com aumento gradual, até que o animal retirasse seu membro, e então o teste era interrompido para registro do limiar de retirada. Para facilitar a adaptação dos animais a esse instrumento, nos três dias anteriores à lesão foi realizada a simulação desta avaliação [19].…”
