Abstract: Infiltration of surgical wounds with long-acting local anaesthetics (LA) is used to reduce postoperative incisional pain. We hypothesised that infiltration with LA interferes with wound healing in rats. Seventy-two rats were allocated into nine groups. After intraperitoneal anaesthesia, the interscapular dorsal region was infiltrated with equivolumes of saline, 0·5% bupivacaine or ropivacaine, in a randomised double-blind fashion. A standardised incision was performed in the infiltrated area and sutured closed… Show more

“…Due to their regenerative and immunomodulatory potential, MSCs have been evaluated in the past several years as potential cell-based therapeutics for many applications including joint repair procedures [5, 6, 34, 35]. These procedures often necessitate administration of LA to minimize patient pain and discomfort.…”

“…1-3, 9-12 While the main therapeutic targets of LAs are voltage-gated sodium channels in neuronal cells, there is potential for them to have off-target effects on other cells in the microenvironment, including MSCs and macrophages. Several studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects to LAs.…”

“…14 Procedurally, local anesthetics may be applied both to alleviate pain and following surgical implantation of the MSC cell or cell/tissue constructs. 1519 However, the effect of local anesthetics in the extracellular environment on these tissue protective MSC properties has not been thoroughly investigated.…”
