Effect of Incorporating MoS2 in Organic Coatings on the Corrosion Resistance of 316L Stainless Steel in a 3.5% NaCl Solution

Abstract: This study discusses a new coating method to protect 316L stainless steel (SS) from pitting corrosion in high chloride environments. The SS surface was coated using a simple, eco-friendly method, and sunflower oil (SunFO) was used as a base coating and binder for molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). The coated surface was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Corrosion behavior was examined by open-circuit potential (OCP) measurement… Show more

“…On the other hand, the modified electrodes revealed semicircle curves, indicating that the electron transfer between (Fe(CN) 6 ) 3−/4− and the electrode was blocked by the PANI, PANI/CNT, and PANI/CNT/Apt layers on the electrode [ 16 ]. The circuits are described as two modes: electrolyte resistance (R s ), charge transfer resistance (R ct ), layer (coating) resistance (R layer ); CPE1 is the dielectric strength of the layer and solution absorbed by the layer and electric double layer at the electrolyte/substrate interface (CPE2) used for interface capacitance and Warburg diffusion impedance (W) at a low frequency [ 42 , 43 ]. In the EIS test results, the modified electrodes show incomplete semi-circle features.…”

“…These can be further confirmed by FESEM observation. Compared to graphene-based films or other composite coatings with nanomaterials as fillers, the composite coatings prepared herein have higher ηP and R ct values [43,44], meaning that the coatings have better corrosion resistance. At last, the results of the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation show that both nano-SnS and nano-MoS 2 are adsorbed strongly on the copper surface, and the binding energy of nano-MoS 2 is larger than that of nano-SnS.…”

“…The heating temperature complies with the ASTM B88 standard, which is the soft annealing standard of C12200 copper [ 21 , 22 ]. At this temperature, the fatty ester, a constituent of the drawing lubricant, polymerizes through oxidation [ 23 ]. Table 2 presents the chemical composition of the drawing lubricant.…”
