The cultivation of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) has become a growing trend. To ensure the welfare of juvenile largemouth bass in RAS, the effects of different flow velocities on their growth and physiology were explored, considering the flow velocity in real production. Following the stable water quality, juvenile largemouth bass with a body mass of 1.92 ± 0.38 g and body length of 4.50 ± 0.36 cm were reared at three different flow velocities of high flow (HF, 18 cm/s, 4.00 bl/s), middle flow (11 cm/s, 2.45 bl/s, actual average flow velocity of aquaculture) and low flow (4 cm/s, 0.90 bl/s) respectively. The whole experiment lasted 66 days. Results showed that different flow velocities had significant effects on the growth, digestive enzyme activities, antioxidant capabilities and immune capabilities of juvenile largemouth bass. HF can significantly increase the cumulative food intake, hepatosomatic index, weight gain rate, specific growth rate and condition factor of largemouth bass juveniles (p < 0.05). Flow velocity had no significant effect on feed conversion rate (p > 0.05), but the mean of feed conversion rate in HF group was the lowest. Under the HF condition, the activities of trypsin and amylase increased significantly (p < 0.05). For lipase activity, although no significant differences were observed between groups (p > 0.05), the mean of lipase activity increased as the flow velocity increased. With regard to the antioxidant and immune capacity, the malondialdehyde content in HF group significantly decreased (p < 0.05), and the immunoglobulin M content significantly increased (p < 0.05). From the above, following the HF velocity condition, fish growth, oxidative defence, immune capacity and digestive capacity could be improved to a large extent. To achieve higher growth, it is recommended circulating flow velocity of no less than 18 cm/s in largemouth bass at the juvenile stage (approximately 1.9-37.5 g and 4.5-14.5 cm long).

A trend in large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) aquaculture is to establish new production sites that are suitable for extreme weather conditions. However, continuous and strong currents can harm fish welfare. To determine the location of the net cage, it is necessary to assess the swimming ability of large yellow croaker. Currently, our research on large yellow croakers is focusing on behavior analysis. This article investigates the effect of swimming large yellow croakers on metabolites in the body by examining the preferred speed of the group and the endurance swimming ability of single-tailed fish. We evaluated the factors that influence the large yellow croaker’s swimming fatigue by quantifying the content of metabolites and constructed the endurance swimming model using those results. Various results showed large yellow croaker populations tend to grow in low-velocity environments, and this matches their traditional habitat. The samples were taken at different swimming times at a flow rate of 0.35 m/s. According to the results of the metabolite content determination, blood glucose levels is closely related to swimming ability in large yellow croakers. The content of liver glycogen, which regulates blood glucose concentration, decreases in a certain linear relationship. The endurance swimming model of large yellow croaker was constructed according to the changes of liver glycogen content. The goals of this article are to provide a deeper understanding of the physiological characteristics of large yellow croaker swimming, and to provide a reference for choosing fishing and cage sites for large yellow croaker.

The establishment of reservoirs, which alter water temperature and flow dynamics, significantly affects the indigenous fish population, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. To investigate effects of the changing water temperature and flow rate on fish ovaries, we subjected female Coreius guichenoti to the combination of different water temperatures (17°C, 20°C and 23°C denoted as L, N and H, respectively) and flow velocities (0 and 0.5 m/s denoted as S and V, respectively). After 30‐day experiment period, we identified 393, 545, 300 and 657 differentially expressed transcripts in HV versus NV, LV versus NV, HS versus NV and LS versus NV, respectively. The transcriptome results showed that both environmental factors could significantly influence oogenesis, with water temperature exerting a more pronounced effect than flow velocity. In particular, the higher temperature (HV and HS) led to a tendency towards masculinization and even infertility in females, which were consistent with the histopathology results. By contrast, the lower temperature (LV and LS) promoted the progression of desirable female attributes, where static water conditions (LS) had a greater effect compared with flowing water (LV). These findings were of great significance for the adaptive operation of reservoirs to create reasonable and precise ecological flows for managing fish reproduction.
