“…To cope with ROS, plants provides enzymatic (SOD, CAT, GPX and APX) and non-enzymatic antioxidant defense that helps to reduce oxidative damage and improve plant tolerance and resistance to drought and salt stress [55,56].Treatment with antioxidants, especially the combined antioxidants and proline led to synergistic effects between them and caused enhancement in enzymatic antioxidants in chickpea plants. Similar results have been reported by Medeiros et al [57], who found that there was an increase in APX activity in sugarcane using 20 mM proline. Furthermore, ASA foliar application increased CAT, SOD and Calendula POX activity [58].…”

“…The outcome of increased proline concentration on saline stress has been extensively studied in plants, such as sorghum (De Lacerda et al, 2003), rice (Lima et al, 2004) and canola (Saadia et al, 2012). Specifically on sugar cane, when subjected to 100 mM of NaCl, it is observed the accumulation of this osmolyte in leaves and roots (García and Medina, 2003;Vasantha and Rajlakshmi, 2009;Karpe et al, 2012;Medeiros et al, 2015) which corroborates the present work. This accumulation is observed in salt tolerant sugarcane cultivars, because this is a mechanism of protection against salt stress.…”

“…Willadino et al (2011) and Medeiros et al (2015) observed in different sugar cane varieties a constant behavior of the enzyme up to 100 mM of NaCl, after that concentration there was an increase of the enzyme's activity, which was not observed in the present study, this may have occurred due to differences in tolerance between the varieties used. APX is another enzyme that actively participates in the removal of H 2 O 2 by transforming the hydrogen peroxide into water through the oxidation of ascorbate (Teixeira et al, 2004).…”

“…Penggunaan prolin untuk memperkuat toleransi tanaman tebu terhadap kekeringan dapat dilakukan dengan pendekatan molekular (transgenik) atau aplikasi eksogen prolin pada tanaman atau perlakuan benih. Perbedaan genotipe tanaman tebu berpengaruh pada akumulasi prolin indigenous (Medeiros et al 2015). Tanaman toleran kekeringan mampu mengakumulasi prolin lebih banyak dibanding yang peka.…”
