Effect of Carbon Nanofibers on Physical, Adhesion and Rheological Properties of Liquid Epoxidized Natural Rubber Modified Asphalt

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on the performance of liquid epoxidized natural rubber (LENR)-modified asphalt. The physical, adhesion and rheological properties were determined by several tests such as penetration, elastic recovery, ring and ball softening point, Brookfield rotational viscometer, AFM and dynamic shear rheometer. LENR was used at concentrations of 3, 6, and 9%, while CNFs were used at contents of 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5% by weight of asphalt. Conventional test re… Show more

“…In [6], polymer/nanocomposite-modified asphalt binders were shown to be significantly improved compared to the base asphalt binder. In [7], the effects of carbon nanofibers on performancemodified asphalt with liquid epoxidized natural rubber were evaluated, showing an increase in stiffness and a reduction in temperature susceptibility. The addition of carbon nanofibers significantly increased the bonding properties between the base and rubberized binders.…”

“…The optimal content of the modifiers was found to be 0.4% with 6% LENR. Using high percentages (7-8%) of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) polymer to modify the asphalt binder results in superior performance compared to a lower amount of polymer (3%) [7].…”

“…In 2013, world's population passed 7.3 billion and forecasted that the Earth will have 10 billion inhabitants by year 2100 (Irwan et al, 2022). Therefore, the migration process had caused an extreme traffic volume and environmental change as the tremendous movement occurred daily and caused a rapid traffic congestion daily, especially during peak hours in weekdays (Al-Mansob et al, 2022;Chow et al, 2019). Unlike in many developed countries, urban public transport in this country only just reached the development phase as first option by public, not self-sustain and more towards government funded model in which only 20% of people were urban public transport users (Ministry of Transport Malaysia, 2019).…”
