“…The role of MAO-A in this effect of MAO-A inhibitors is supported by the reports that removal of the superior cervical ganglia (SCGX) resulted in a loss of MAO-A activity in postganglionic sympathetic fibers innervating the pineal (Snyder et al, 1965) and attenuated stimulation of rat pineal melatonin synthesis induced by the selective MAO-A inhibitor clorgyline (Mclntyre et al, 1985). In according with this animal data, administration of a single dose of the non-selective MAO inhibitor tranylcypromine (Oxenkrug et al, 1986b; and selective MAO-A inhibitor brofaromine but not of selective MAO-B inhibitor pargytine (Bieck et al, 1988) increased plasma melatonin levels in human volunteers. Chronic administration of selective MAO-A (clorgyline) and non-selective MAO (tranylcypromine) inhibitors but not of selective MAO-B inhibitor (deprenyl) have also elevated plasma melatonin levels in depressed patients (Murphy et al, 1986).…”
