Effect of barium addition and plasma nitriding treatment on chemical and physical properties of Al, Pb borate glass system as a developed radiation shield

Abstract: The effect of the BaO addition of to aluminum, lead borate in a series of (BaO)x (B2O3)60-x (Al2O3)10 (Li2O)10 (PbO)20 glasses where x = 0 to 50 weight% have been studied through their shielding, mechanical, thermal and chemical properties. The physical parameters such as molar volume (Vm), density (ρ), and oxygen packing density (OPD) were evaluated and discussed. Moreover, the thermal stability of the investigated system increases with BaO content. The present study proved that each of the plasma nitriding t… Show more

“…Figure 2b shows that the shielding sheet (contains tungsten 60 wt%) has a polymer ratio approximately twice that of Figure 2a he shielding sheet (contains tungsten 80 wt%). It can be seen that the shielding material in Figure 2a is not sufficiently dispersed, and pinholes appear in various locations [24]. According to the Beer-Lambert law,…”

It can be seen that the shielding material in Figure 2a is not sufficiently dispersed, and pinholes appear in various locations [24]. In this study, to alleviate the reduction in tensile strength of the sheet, a composite yarn covered with a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) yarn was manufactured on a tungsten wire (Beijing Tianlong tungsten Technology Co. Ltd., Beijing, China) with a purity of 98% and a diameter of 30 μm [25].…”

“…To clarify the validity of the previous conclusions, the density was measured for each sample, and then plotted in Figure (3) for comparison, where the density is very sensitive to any changes that may occur in the internal structural of a solid material. The Vickers micro-hardness values HV were calculated for all studied samples, before and after the plasma treatment, according to the previous standard formula [22][23][24][25]; where F is the indentation load and d is the diagonal length impression, as seen in figure ( 4). It's clear that the incorporation of La-impurities acted to increase the glass hardness (resistance to elastic deformations) as a result to the strength of the atomic bonds in the glass structure induced by dopants [26][27][28][29].…”
