Thermal plumes of small scale generated by spatially separated heat sources can form, like atoms in a chemical compound, complex structures of different kind and with distinct behaviors. The situation becomes even more complex if plumes can interact with imposed vertical shear (a horizontal wind). In this analysis a 'minimal framework' based on the application of a filtering process to the governing balance equations for mass, momentum and energy (falling under the general heading of 'Large Eddy Simulation' approach), is used together with Direct Numerical Simulation to inquiry about the relative importance of buoyancy and vertical shear effects in determining the patterning scenario when highly unsteady dynamics are established (turbulent flow). Emerging patterns range from the flow dominated by a static rising jet produced by the aggregation of plumes, which are pushed by horizontal leftwards and rightwards winds towards the center of the physical domain, to convective systems with disconnected thermal pillars of smaller scale, which travel in the same direction of the prevailing wind. The classical sheltering effect, which for flows that are steady 'in mean' simply consists of an increased deflection of the leading buoyant jet with respect to the trailing ones, is taken over by a variety of new phenomena, including (but not limited to) fast plume removal-rebirth mechanisms (with local increase in the velocity frequency and shrinkage in the related amplitude), 'bubble' formation-rupture and local departure of the frequency spectrum from the Kolmogorov similarity law.

Energy and buildings are increasingly becoming subjects for investigations, especially for the indoor air quality domain coupled to energy demand. The physics of fluids flowing inside enclosures bring basic models to understand and build better schemes. This paper is devoted to studying ventilation strategies in regards to Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and energy efficiency in floor refreshing houses. A room model is considered in a simplified level, as a cavity heated on the external sidewall and cooled on the bottom ground surface. The external air injector is at variable positions and interacting with the needed cooling power; the air quality (mixing ability) and thermal comfort are also studied. The cooling efficiency inside the considered volume and the average air temperature are analyzed for a given temperature difference characterizing the natural convection level (Rayleigh number, Ra = 106) and a horizontal ventilation (moderate Reynolds number Re = 102). An obtained complex flow structure indicates that the natural convection and the forced flow (ventilation) act directly on the resulting patterns, mixing ability, heat exchange which in a straight line affect the thermal comfort and in fine the energy cost (cooling requirement).

Numerical study for the effect of an external magnetic field on the mixed convection of Al2O3–water Newtonian nanofluid in a right-angle vented trapezoidal cavity was performed using the finite volume method. The non-homogeneous Buongiorno model is applied for numerical description of the dynamic phenomena inside the cavity. The nanofluid, with low temperature and high concentration, enters the cavity through the upper open border, and is evacuated through opening placed at the right end of the bottom wall. The cavity is heated from the inclined wall, while the remainder walls are adiabatic and impermeable to both the base fluid and nanoparticles. After validation of the model, the analysis was carried out for a wide range of Hartmann number (0 ≼ Ha ≼ 100) and nanoparticles volume fraction (0 ≼ ϕ0 ≼ 0.06). The flow behavior as well as the temperature and nanoparticles distribution shows a particular sensitivity to the variations of both the Hartmann number and the nanofluid concentration. The domination of conduction mechanism at high Hartmann numbers reflects the significant effect of Brownian diffusion which tends to uniform the distribution of nanoparticles in the domain. The average Nusselt number which increases with the nanoparticles addition, depends strongly on the Hartmann number. Finally, a correlation predicting the average Nusselt number within such geometry as a function of the considered parameters is proposed.
