Effect of Aeration Mode on Microbial Structure and Efficiency of Treatment of TSS-Rich Wastewater from Meat Processing

Abstract: The present study investigated the effect of aeration mode on microbial structure and efficiency of treatment of wastewater with a high concentration of suspended solids (TSS) from meat processing in sequencing batch reactors (R). R1 was constantly aerated, while in R2 intermittent aeration was applied. DNA was isolated from biomass and analyzed using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and real-time PCR. As a result, in R1 aerobic granular sludge was cultivated (SVI30 = 44 mL g−1 MLSS), while in R2 a very well-s… Show more

“…The growth of numerous polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) belonging to the taxa Cryomorphaceae was found to be distributed in the surface layer and inner layer of granular sludge. 64 Cryomorphaceae played an essential role in the carbon and energy cycle of extreme environments, and most bacteria of this family were found in locations rich in organic carbon but grew relatively slowly, with colonies taking at least 7 days to appear and grow to full size. 65 In SBR, the abundance of unclassified Xanthomonadaceae showed a positive correlation with ammonia.…”

“…The treatment of wastewater in sequencing batch reactors with a high concentration of suspended solids from meat processing is the subject of a research article authored by Jachimowicz et al [5]. The main aim of their study was to explore interrelationships between the aeration mode, microbial community composition, and the efficiency of removal of nitrogen, phosphorus, organic compounds, and total suspended solids.…”
