Effect of a single dose of Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii on the occurrence of porcine neonatal diarrhoea

Abstract: Piglet neonatal diarrhoea is an important issue in modern pig production and is linked to increased mortality and poor growth rates, affecting long-term pig health, increasing use of medication and cost of production. Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii (SB) is a probiotic yeast with documented clinical efficacy in the prevention and treatment of diarrhoeal diseases in humans. The objectives of the current study were to evaluate the effect of SB on occurrence and severity of neonatal diarrhoea in piglets, … Show more

“…Table 3). In addition, Equations (4) and (5) confirmed the increased growth rates achieved by Sc b in comparison to Sc. Indeed, these equations estimated significant s 2 parameter values (p-value < 2 × 10 −16 ) for Sc b and Sc respectively, corresponding to different growth rates for both yeast species.…”

“…Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii (Sc b ) is another popular yeast species that was isolated from fruit in Indochina and has been utilised as a remedy for diarrhea since 1950 [4,5]. Sc b has shown a capacity to prevent travellers' diarrhea usually caused by bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp.…”

“…Moreover, aerobic and facultative anaerobic bacteria contribute to the consumption of oxygen in the intestine, which can promote the colonization of strict anaerobes [21,22]. Saccharomyces boulardii (S. boulardii) is an aerobic yeast [23], and early intervention with S. boulardii can alleviate porcine neonatal diarrhea [24,25]. Clostridium butyricum (C. butyricum) is a probiotic and has been used for the clinical treatment of premature infants with diarrhea by promoting the maturation of the immune function [26][27][28].…”

“…Host genetics plays a major role in shaping the intestinal microbiota of mice and humans (Büsing and Zeyner, 2015; Dąbrowska and Witkiewicz, 2016; Hancox et al, 2015). Chen et al (2018), Kubasova et al (2018) and Lu et al (2018) reported the impact of host genetics on development of gut microbiota in pigs.…”
