Problem-based learning (PBL) is a unique form of pedagogy dedicated to developing students' self-learning and clinical practice skills. After several decades of development, although applications vary, PBL has been recognized all over the world and implemented by many medical schools. This review summarizes and updates the application and study of PBL in medical education through the literature published between 1993 and early 2017. It focuses on understanding real medical PBL courses and ways to improve PBL to achieve better learning outcomes. PBL aims to develop lifelong skills to solve practical problems rather than limiting learning to theoretical knowledge. To achieve this goal, strict and reasonable procedures need to be designed and implemented. Rigorous monitoring and timely feedback and evaluation are indispensable to constant improvements and perfecting of the process. © 2017 by The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 46(2):186-194, 2018.

Objetivo: analisar a percepção de enfermeiras atuantes em leitos psiquiátricos de um hospital geral sobre a realização de um treinamento em saúde mental com a utilização de metodologias ativas. Método: pesquisa do tipo descritiva, exploratória, com abordagem qualitativa, realizada em um hospital geral de grande porte, com cinco enfermeiras, no período de junho a novembro de 2019. A coleta de dados consistiu em duas etapas: realização e avaliação do treinamento. Para a realização do treinamento, utilizaram-se metodologias ativas, com foco na aprendizagem baseada em problemas e problematização. A avaliação do treinamento foi realizada por meio de entrevista semiestruturada, elaborada segundo o modelo proposto por Kirkpatrick, e os dados analisados por meio da análise de conteúdo temática de Bardin. Resultados: os enfermeiros consideraram o treinamento positivo e desenvolveram habilidades como abordagem terapêutica, escuta ativa e mudança de comportamento. Conclusão: o treinamento foi eficaz na construção do conhecimento, promovendo transformações e reflexões significativas na aprendizagem de enfermeiros, além de contribuir com a produção de habilidades e atitudes na área de saúde mental, valorizando a aprendizagem significativa.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between intrinsic motivation and learning outcomes of nursing college students who took the Fundamentals of nursing as a problem-based learning method.Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we identified the intrinsic motivations of 114 nursing students who completed problem-based learning using the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory. The t-test was conducted to identify differences according to intrinsic motivation, and correlation analysis was performed to confirm the relationship between intrinsic motivation and learning outcomes.Results: The group with higher intrinsic motivation showed higher scores in all domains of self-assessed learning outcomes than the lower group. It was the ‘Relatedness with an instructor’ that showed the highest correlation with the learning outcomes in the domains of intrinsic motivation.Conclusion: Problem-based learning is an effective learning method for cultivating the competencies needed for nurses. The intrinsic motivation of students is an important factor in the performance of problem-based learning. For the efficiency of problem-based learning, efforts should be made to develop and apply autonomy-supportive interventions that can enhance intrinsic motivation.
