The main purpose of the study was to evaluate the resting bioelectrical activity of the upper trapezius muscle (the UT muscle) before and after one of the two interventions: postisometric muscle relaxation (PIR) and Kinesio Taping (KT). Moreover a comparison between group results was conducted. From the initial 61 volunteers, 52 were selected after exclusion criteria and were allocated randomly to 2 groups: PIR group and KT group. Outcome measures were assessed at baseline and completion of the intervention. The primary outcome measure was change in bioelectrical activity of UT muscle evaluated by surface electromyography (sEMG). Secondary outcomes included subjective assessment of pain using visual analogue scale (VAS). Significant differences were found only in KT group: the average resting bioelectrical activity decreased by 0.8 μV (p = 0.0237) and the average VAS result reduced by 2.0 points (p = 0.0001). Greater decrease of VAS results was recorded in KT group compared to PIR group (p = 0.0010). Both PIR and KT intervention did not influence significantly the resting bioelectrical activity of UT muscle. KT application was better for pain relief in the studied sample compared with PIR intervention.

Kinesio taping (KT) has been widely used to prevent muscle pain and to improve range of motion in clinical settings. However, no previous research has examined how long KT should be applied to muscle following damaging exercise. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the duration of KT application on markers of muscle damage following eccentric exercise. Thirty-two male subjects participated in the study and were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: control (CON), KT-post, KT-30 min, or KT-24 hr. Eccentric exercise consisted of 2 sets of 25 contractions of elbow flexors using the non-dominant arm. Maximal isometric strength, muscle soreness (SOR), range of motion, and creatine kinase activity were measured before, immediately after, and at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr after exercise. The KT-24 hr group showed lesser muscle damage and a faster recovery time than the CON and KT-post groups. Both the KT-30 min and KT-24 hr groups showed lesser SOR than CON and KT-post groups. These findings suggested that prolonged application of KT had a positive effect on markers of muscle damage.

The Contribution of Kinesiotape Application Combined with Calf Exercises to Conservative Treatment Efficacy in Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Objective: Exercise is recommended to increase venous refilling time and for restoring the calf muscle pump in chronic venous insufficiency. Several researchers reported positive results on efficacy of kinesiotape application in chronic venous insufficiency. The present study is designed to investigate the efficacy of kinesiotape application when combined to a calf exercise program in patients with chronic venous insufficiency. Material and Methods: A total of 51 patients were included in the study. Participants were randomly divided into three groups. Visual analog pain scale and visual analog general health scale eval--uations, and ankle joint range of motion and isokinetic muscle strength measurements were performed before the treatment. Interventions regarding the groups were as follows: Group 1; the exercise program alone, Group 2; kinesiotape application combined with the exercise program, Group 3; the exercise program with pseudo kinesiotape application. The measurements were repeated four weeks following the interventions. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the demographic data of the patients (p>0.05). In all three groups, the visual analog pain scale scores decreased and the vi--sual analog general health scale scores increased (p˂0.05). The decreasing visual analog pain scale scores in groups 2 and 3 were statistically higher than that of group 1 (p˂0.05). There was no change in the range of motion of the ankle joints after treatment (p˃0.05). Isokinetic plantar muscle strength was increased significantly in all three groups (p˂0.05). However, muscle strength and total work values of Group 2 patients were significantly higher than the other two groups (p˂0.05). Conclusion: Calf exercises are effective in decreasing the symptoms of chronic venous insuffici--ency. This effect can be augmented by kineosiotape application.
