This study analysed the effect of socioeconomic factors on the yields of 28 family-operated dairy farms in the mesoregion of the Triângulo/Alto Paranaiba in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, to identify which components constituted greater proportions of the total costs and operating efficiency and those components’ effects on revenue. Data were collected from January to December 2013. The socioeconomic factors, place of residence, producer's age, education level, and land tenure were evaluated for their effects on the variables, gross margin, net margin, yield, and profitability. In this study, none of these socioeconomic factors affected the economic variables. Of the net operating costs, the components that constituted most of the dairy farming costs, in descending order, were feed, labour and sanitation. For total costs, the components in descending order were feed, depreciation and return on invested capital. Of the net operating costs, the components constituting most of the dairy business revenue, in descending order, were feed, miscellaneous expenses and labour.

RESUMO.Objetivou-se identificar os pontos fracos e fortes associados à qualidade do leite em propriedades de agricultura familiar, visando o levantamento e a correção de pontos falhos e, consequentemente, o aumento da produtividade e da rentabilidade. Foram analisados 20 sistemas de produção de leite, localizados na microrregião Alto Rio Grande, sul de Minas Gerais. Os dados foram coletados a partir de um formulário semiestruturado, contendo 97 perguntas, no período de março de 2016. Para definição dos pontos fracos uma equipe multidisciplinar utilizou a ferramentas de gestão brainstorming e, para ranqueamento, a Matriz GUT. Os principais pontos fracos encontrados, em ordem decrescente foram: alta contagem de célula somática (CCS) (células/ml), consumo restrito de volumoso, não realização de escrituração zootécnica, alta contagem bacteriana total (CBT) (UFC/ml) e ausência de assistência técnica nas propriedades. Para definição dos pontos fortes, a mesma equipe disciplinar, também utilizou a ferramenta de gestão brainstorming. Assim, os principais reconhecidos foram: possuir ordenhadeira mecânica, existência de energia elétrica, leite vendido in natura para o laticínio. More than half of the milk in Brazil comes from family-owned dairy farms, which account for 84.4% of all dairy farms. Despite this, little is known about family-owned dairy farms, especially those in the western Amazon. As such, the objective of this study was to analyze and characterize the production, sanitary conditions, reproductive rates, and milk quantities produced on 100 family dairy farms in Vale do Acre, in the western Amazon. The data were collected from March to June 2016, using a semi-structured questionnaire containing 549 questions. The answers given by producers, as well as local observations were registered in SPSS® spreadsheets, and descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data. Results indicated low rates of productivity, low total milk production, and low quantities of milk/cow/day. The data also revealed sanitary and productive problems such as inadequate herd composition, lack of grouping of lactating cows, and short duration of lactation. In addition, not all heifers were immunized against brucellosis, and there was often an absence of water troughs. We concluded that it is necessary to improve the management of family-owned farms, and take technical assistance measures to correct weak points in dairy cow health and reproduction. Moreover, it is essential to improve productivity to raise the profitability of rural dairy farms.
