ABSTRACT:The objective of this work was to determine the effect of environmental variables and supplementation levels on physiological parameters of Moxotó goats in confined and semiconfined rising systems, in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The semi-confined individuals were kept on a grass based diet during the day and arrested in the end of the afternoon. The confined animals were kept in a management center, receiving two diets composed by forage cactus and maniçoba hay into two different levels (0.5 and 1.5% of the body weight). Inside the management center and in the external environment the environmental comfort parameters were set high during the afternoon period characterizing a situation of thermal discomfort for the animals. During the morning the semi-confined animals presented an average respiratory frequency (69.5 mov min -1 ) and rectal temperature (39.5 o C) higher than the confined ones (62.6 mov min -1 and 39.0 o C, respectively). The confined and semi-confined animals were able to maintain their rectal temperature within normal limits, with increase in the cardiac beatings rate and respiratory frequency. The greater percentage of the used supplementations (1.5%) seemed to increase rectal temperature in the two studied rising systems.KEYWORDS: thermoregulation, environmental variables, native goat race, semi-arid. EFEITO DO AMBIENTE TÉRMICO E SUPLEMENTAÇÃO NAS VARIÁVEIS FISIOLÓGICAS DE CAPRINOS MOXOTÓ EM CONFINAMENTO E SEMICONFINAMENTORESUMO: Este trabalho teve os objetivos de determinar e de avaliar o efeito das variáveis ambientais e quantidade de suplementação, com concentrados, nas variáveis fisiológicas de caprinos Moxotó, confinados e semiconfinados, no semi-árido nordestino. Os animais semiconfinados foram mantidos em regime de pasto durante o dia e recolhidos ao final da tarde. Os animais confinados foram mantidos em um centro de manejo, recebendo duas dietas compostas por palma forrageira e feno de maniçoba, com duas quantidades de concentrados (0,5 e 1,5% do peso vivo). No interior do aprisco e no ambiente externo, os índices de conforto ambiental ficaram elevados no período da tarde, caracterizando situação de desconforto térmico para os animais. No período da manhã, os animais semiconfinados apresentaram freqüência respiratória média de 69,5 mov min -1 e temperatura retal de 39,5 o C, mais elevadas que os confinados (62,6 mov min -1 e 39,0 o C, respectivamente). Tanto os animais confinados como os semiconfinados conseguiram manter a temperatura retal dentro dos limites normais, havendo aumento nos batimentos cardíacos e na freqüência respiratória. Maior percentagem de suplementação (1,5%) provocou aumento na temperatura retal, nos dois sistemas de criação. RESUMO:Esta pesquisa teve o objetivo de determinar os índices de conforto térmico em instalações para ovinos, analisar os parâmetros fisiológicos e o gradiente térmico de quatro grupos genéticos, na região semiárida paraibana. Foram utilizados 40 animais, dez por grupo genético, que foram: Cariri, Morada Nova, Barriga Negra e Cara Curta, todas fêmeas, alojadas aleatoriamente em quatro apriscos. Os índices ambientais dentro das instalações, principalmente das 11 às 15 h, ficaram acima da zona de conforto térmico para ovinos adultos, com exceção da umidade relativa do ar, que ficou com média diária de 67,5%. A temperatura retal dos animais esteve dentro da faixa normal, sendo o grupo genético Morada Nova o que apresentou menor valor (38,6 ºC). A frequência respiratória dos animais em cada grupo genético ficou acima do valor recomendado, porém o Morada Nova apresentou o menor valor (43,5 mov min -1 ); em contrapartida, o Cariri e o Barriga Negra apresentaram os maiores valores (48,0 e 47,3 mov min -1 , respectivamente). Os animais com pelagem mais escura e de maior porte, como os da raça Cariri, apresentaram maior gradiente térmico entre a temperatura do ar e a temperatura superficial. Os animais apresentaram alto índice de tolerância ao calor, ou seja, bem adaptados ao ambiente tropical, podendo o grupo genético Cariri ser caracterizado como o menos adaptado e o Morada Nova considerado o mais bem adaptado às condições experimentais. Seasonal and circadian variation of the sexual behavior of Morada Nova rams in tropical environment

-The objective of this study was to evaluate the seasonal and daily variation in sexual behavior of Morada Nova breeders raised in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The data were collected from four rams and 114 ewes of the Morada Nova breed -55 females in the dry season and another 59 in the rainy season. Observations were performed in the dry and rainy seasons, divided into four times of the day: morning (05:01 h to 11.00 h), afternoon (11.01 h to 17.00 h), evening (17.01 h to 23:00 h), and dawn (23:01 h to 05.00 h). Sexual behavior was assessed for a period of 24 h/day, in a breeding season. One ram was used each three days. The behavioral patterns of the rams in view of females were observed during the recognition (sniffing the female urine, bouts of anogenital sniffing, and flehmen reaction), preparatory (exposure of tongue and penis, leg-kicking, and low-pitched bleats), and copulatory (number of mounts, number of ejaculations, and refractory period) phases. The rams were more active during daytime. The animals in the rainy season showed more efficient sexual behaviors by the lower frequency of mounts per ejaculation and greater number of ejaculations in a shorter time. In contrast, courting behaviors such as exposure of tongue, number of mounts, low-pitched bleats, and leg-kicking were more frequent in the dry season. In the semi-arid region with latitudes close to 7°N, Morada Nova rams have a higher intensity of precopulatory behaviors and lower frequency of ejaculations in the dry season.
