“…These attributes are defined by factors such as genotype, pre-harvest management, proper harvesting time and post-harvest treatments (Finger & Casali, 2002). Quality parameters as onion bulb pungency level and/or sweetness can be modified due to irrigation strategy (Enciso et al, 2009), postharvest treatment (Nega et al, 2015), K application (Deshpande et al, 2013) or salt stress (Coca et al, 2012). For many years, in order to improve the productivity of crops as onion it was common to increase the planted area and/or use uncontrolled quantities of synthetic fertilizers (Ayala & Rao, 2002).…”

“…Las sales tienen efectos adversos sobre las propiedades físicas, químicas y microbiológicas del suelo (Gili et al 2004). Varias son las causas vinculadas a los procesos de salinización, entre las cuales, es posible citar el excesivo uso de fertilizantes, calidad del agua de riego, falta de obras de ingeniería, como los drenajes y ampliación de la frontera agrícola hacia zonas de vegetación nativa (Coca et al 2012).…”

“…Soil salinity generates stress in roots because of the synthesis of abscisic acid (ABA) as an early response to physiological changes, such as the reduction of hydraulic conductivity and remote stomatal closure, generating direct blockage in photosynthesis because of the limited entry of CO 2 , a necessary substrate for the Calvin cycle (Jiménez et al, 2012;Quintana et al, 2016). Coca et al (2012) stated that sensitivity to saline stress in onions varies directly with the phenological stage and may be associated with other pathologies, which may include the conditions that lead to increased pink root incidence, directly affecting root growth, root thickness, and production, with a reduction in water potential, preventing the absorption of water by roots, and cellular reduction of the root apex and young leaves. This is more evident in root length because of a reduction in the capacity to uptake nutrients such as K + and Ca +2 (Semida et al, 2020).…”
