“…The program for the academic year 2010–2011 included seminars and workshops on biomedical ethics, philosophy for children, film, contemporary literature, jazz, mathematics, architecture, psychology and music, women and society, and economics. The founder of the UPC, Michel Onfray (), a philosopher who took early retirement in order to teach the “counter‐history” of philosophy, also created the Universite Populaire d'Argentan and wrote the following in the manifesto for both institutions: The Universite Populaire de Caen proposes a dozen seminars to analyze and understand the functioning of the modern world, and to advance alternatives to contemporary apathy. Moreover, we recognize that our age is defined by a form of neoliberal globalization: money makes the law, and while the market clearly determines the economy it also determines culture, consciousness, and human relations not only at the national but also at the international level.…”

Academic freedom has been a contested concept throughout its history, but it is a necessary condition for the advancement and dissemination of shared knowledge. It is an integral part of university education and research, and is intimately connected with collegial governance and the common good. In Canada's research-intensive universities, the threats to academic freedom are both internal and external. This article examines these issues and suggests ways in which to resist and possibly overcome them, including the establishment of alternative universities.

Uskonnon julkinen näkyvyys on kasvanut. Samalla myös uskontokritiikistä ja ateismista on tullut näkyvämpää kuin koskaan ennen. Väärin uskottu? Ateismin uusi näkyvyys tarkastelee ateismia ja uskontoa koskevaa julkista keskustelua monipuolisesti ja kriittisesti. Teos osoittaa erilaisia laadullisia ja määrällisiä aineistoja tutkien, miten, miksi ja missä muodossa ateismista on tullut näkyvä keskustelunaihe niin Suomessa kuin kansainvälisesti. Se ehdottaa, että äänekkäimpien ateistien ja heidän vastustajiensa jäsennykset tarvitsevat rinnalleen keskustelua rikastuttavaa ja monipuolistavaa uskonto- ja kulttuuritieteellistä otetta uskonnosta ja ateismista. Teos myös kehittelee suomalaista ateismin ja uskonnottomuuden tutkimusta. Se sopii yliopistolliseksi kurssikirjaksi ja hakuteokseksi kaikille ateismista kiinnostuneille.
