Abstract: The primary role of the research ethics committee is to provide an independent ethical review of submitted study proposals to ensure that they comply with recognized ethical standards. This implies knowledge of the basic principles of (research) ethics and the importance of appropriate training for committee members in this regard is fully recognized. But is this enough?
