Abstract: The two-dimensional (2D) edge plasma density distribution in the scrape off layer magnetically connected to the ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) antennae is studied experimentally and numerically in the tokamak Tore Supra. A local density decrease in front of the loaded ICRH antenna (“pump-out” effect) is demonstrated by Langmuir probe measurements in a low recycling regime. An up–down asymmetry in the heat-flux and in the antenna erosion is also observed, and is associated with poloidal variations of th… Show more

“…Amongst the reported effects, RF sheaths rectification [27] is invoked to explain enhanced impurity production and local hot spots when using ICRF. The formation of RF induced flows in front of the powered antennas [33,34], and ICRF power induced density depletion as observed in both JET and AUG [35] have also been reported. These local SOL plasma modifications in front of the antennas can contribute to the differences (on AUG) between the measured coupling resistance and the ones expected from the SOL measurements (performed away from the antennas) as described in section 3.1.…”

“…For instance, large efforts were devoted into understanding the RF sheath [16,17], the RF induced edge plasma convection [11,13,18] and the associated impurity generations [13,[19][20][21]. The previous AUG experiments [6,22] have shown that the RF rectified sheaths are responsible for much of the interactions between the ICRF and edge plasma.…”

“…For megawatt power coupling, the rectified potential is generally large (~ kV) and has important consequences. In fusion experiments, rf sheaths cause a variety of deleterious interactions, such as impurity generation, 7 convective transport, [8][9][10] hot spots 11 , 12 and damage to the antenna and surrounding structures, and power dissipation, 13 caused by both the near-field 7 and far-field 14 waves. In many experiments, the heating efficiency with low-k || waves is poor, and sheath power dissipation is a likely candidate to explain this phenomenon.…”
