Abstract: Infrastructure development and overfishing in the Amazon make it imperative to define adequate scales for the ecosystem‐based management of commercial fisheries and the wetlands on which they depend. We mapped fisheries and fish ecology data from Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and Colombia to an explicit GIS framework of river basins and mainstems. Migratory species account for more than 80% of the known maximum catches of commercial fisheries across the Amazon. Of these migratory species, we nominated six long‐distanc… Show more

“…Under the increasing impacts of climatic change and human activities, more components of favourable ecosystems such as water temperature regimes, flood pulses and sedimentation processes should be designed based on the needs of aquatic organisms (Sabo et al, 2017; Wang, Li, Duan, Chen, et al, 2014; Wang, Li, Duan, Luo, et al, 2014; Yang et al, 2015). Third, the need for appropriate and stringent fisheries policies, to ensure sustainable wild capture and aquaculture practices, must be addressed (Kang et al, 2017; Ma et al, 2018; Wang, Cheng, et al, 2015; Wang, Li, & Waerebeek, 2015), and ecosystem‐based fisheries management in the light of selective fishing policies should be implemented (Goulding et al, 2019; Zhou et al, 2010). The lakes (reservoirs) in the Yangtze River Basin potentially suitable for aquaculture should be scientifically differentiated, and sustainable fisheries should be ensured by encouraging responsible well‐managed fishing activities compatible with engaging local communities in generating socio‐ecological benefits.…”

“…Of all first‐order streams below 60° latitude on Earth, 69% are estimated to be temporary, and in arid regions, even large rivers and expansive lakes regularly dry (Peel et al, ; Raymond et al, ). The Amazon River surges during the rainy season, temporarily flooding vast forests within the lateral floodplain (Goulding et al, ), and to some degree, all natural lotic systems have floodplains (Junk, Bayley, & Sparks, ). Innumerable ditches and fields are inundated each year, representing an entire class of artificial aquatic habitats (Saulnier‐Talbot & Lavoie, ).…”
