Development of insecticide resistance has been a serious concern worldwide, whose mechanisms have been attributed to evolutionary changes in pest insect genomes such as alteration of drug target sites, up-regulation of degrading enzymes, and enhancement of drug excretion. Here, we report a previously unknown mechanism of insecticide resistance: Infection with an insecticide-degrading bacterial symbiont immediately establishes insecticide resistance in pest insects. The bean bug Riptortus pedestris and allied stinkbugs harbor mutualistic gut symbiotic bacteria of the genus Burkholderia , which are acquired by nymphal insects from environmental soil every generation. In agricultural fields, fenitrothion-degrading Burkolderia strains are present at very low densities. We demonstrated that the fenitrothion-degrading Burkholderia strains establish a specific and beneficial symbiosis with the stinkbugs and confer a resistance of the host insects against fenitrothion. Experimental applications of fenitrothion to field soils drastically enriched fenitrothion-degrading bacteria from undetectable levels to >80% of total culturable bacterial counts in the field soils, and >90% of stinkbugs reared with the enriched soil established symbiosis with fenitrothion-degrading Burkholderia . In a Japanese island where fenitrothion has been constantly applied to sugarcane fields, we identified a stinkbug population wherein the insects live on sugarcane and ≈8% of them host fenitrothion-degrading Burkholderia . Our finding suggests the possibility that the symbiont-mediated insecticide resistance may develop even in the absence of pest insects, quickly establish within a single insect generation, and potentially move around horizontally between different pest insects and other organisms.

. Ciclo de vida y análisis de riesgo climático de Leptoglossus zonatus Dallas (Hemiptera: Coreidae) para las zonas productoras de sorgo en el estado de Morelos, México. Acta Zoológica Mexicana (n.s.), 32(3), 300-309. RESUMEN.Leptoglossus zonatus se alimenta de varias plantas de importancia económica, una de ellas es el sorgo Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, principal cultivo de temporal en Morelos. Hasta el momento no existen publicaciones referentes a las unidades calor acumuladas para el desarrollo de esta especie, lo cual puede ser utilizado para calcular el número de generaciones que se presentan durante el ciclo de cualquier cultivo o durante un año, y con ello estimar su daño potencial. Para obtener lo anterior, se estudió el ciclo biológico de la especie en tres condiciones diferentes de temperatura: 20.4 °C, 21.56 °C y 24.8 °C, y con ello se calcularon las unidades calor acumuladas con el método de temperaturas medias, así como el número de generaciones en cada estación climatológica de Morelos. Estos últimos datos se proyectaron en un mapa de la zona sorguera de la entidad y se ubicó el nivel de riesgo en base a la incidencia de L. zonatus en las áreas productoras de sorgo. En las tres condiciones de estudio, el ciclo biológico de L. zonatus tuvo una duración de 164, 152 y 109 días, respectivamente. La temperatura base (temperatura umbral de desarrollo) calculada para este insecto fue de 10.37 °C y las unidades calor acumuladas para completar su ciclo biológico fueron 1,680. De acuerdo con los datos históricos de temperatura, L. zonatus presentó hasta 3 generaciones al año en las áreas productoras de sorgo de Morelos, lo cual se considera como un riesgo potencial alto. El alto riesgo se observó en los municipios de Puente de Ixtla, Amacuzac, Mazatepec, Miacatlán, Temixco, Emiliano ABSTRACT. Up to date there are no publications on degree days for growing development of this species, which can be used to calculate the number of generations that develop during the cycle of any crop or through one year, and thereby estimate its potential harm. These data were projected onto a map of the Morelos and the level of risk of incidence of L. zonatus was located in the sorghum producing areas. ABSTRACT. Comparative description of the immature stages of two very similar leaf footed bugs, Holymenia clavigera (Herbst) and Anisoscelis foliacea marginella (Dallas) (Hemiptera, Coreidae, Anisoscelini). Holymenia clavigera (Herbst, 1784) and Anisoscelis foliacea marginella (Dallas, 1852) (Hemiptera, Coreidae) present a remarkable similarity regarding egg and nymphal morphology. On the contrary, their adult stages are remarkably different. This study describes and compares the immature stages of these two coreid species. Excepting for the last instar and the shape of the hind tibia from third to last instar, nymphs of both species were identical in their gross morphologies and ultrastructures. However, H. clavigera was significantly larger than A. foliacea marginella in all stages. Thus, we suggest that these species may have evolved through evolutionary convergence, parsimony between the immature stages after speciation, Müllerian mimicry or genetic drift. RESUMO.Descrição comparada dos estágios imaturos de dois coreídeos, Holymenia clavigera (Herbst) e Anisoscelis foliacea marginella (Dallas) (Hemiptera, Coreidae, Anisoscelini). Holymenia clavigera (Herbst, 1784) e Anisoscelis foliacea marginella (Dallas, 1852) (Hemiptera, Coreidae) apresentam uma acentuada semelhança morfológica nos estágios de ovo e ninfa. Entrementes, os adultos são marcadamente distintos. Este estudo descreve e compara os estágios imaturos destas espécies. Excetuando-se a largura da tíbia do terceiro ao quinto instar ninfal, bem como o aspecto e coloração geral das ninfas de quinto ínstars, as ninfas de ambas as espécies foram idênticas em suas morfologias e ultraestruturas. Contudo, H. clavigera foi significativamente maior que A. foliacea marginella em todos os estágios. Desta forma, os imaturos de tais espécies podem ter evoluído através de convergência evolutiva, parcimônia das referidas fases após especiação, mimetismo mileriano ou deriva genética.
