Economic Feasibility of Agrivoltaic Systems in Food-Energy Nexus Context: Modelling and a Case Study in Niger

Abstract: In the literature, many studies outline the advantages of agrivoltaic (APV) systems from different viewpoints: optimized land use, productivity gain in both the energy and water sector, economic benefits, etc. A holistic analysis of an APV system is needed to understand its full advantages. For this purpose, a case study farm size of 0.15 ha has been chosen as a reference farm at a village in Niger, West Africa. Altogether four farming cases are considered. They are traditional rain-fed, irrigated with diesel-… Show more

“…When the dynamic payback period (DPP) is high, the NPV is higher than the benchmark electricity price without subsidies, but lower than the actual on-grid electricity price with subsidies, and the economic benefits of the case project depend on the degree of subsidies. Previous studies [34,67] have also reached similar conclusions. We identified the following factors:…”

“…Dinesh and Pearce argued that the economic value of a farm increases by more than 30% when agrivoltaics are used instead of traditional agricultural practices [53]. In Niger, Bhandari et al estimated and compared the LCOE of energy production facilities using diesel engines and PV systems on salad, cabbage, tomato, and mint farms [54]. Poonia et al estimated the LCOE of PV systems according to one-, two-, and three-row array structures in India [55].…”

“…The BCR is used in CBA with the objective of summarizing the overall relationship between costs and benefits of a proposed investment. When the BCR is >1 the project shows suitability and desirability (Bhandari et al, 2021).…”
