Economic Comparison of Satellite, Plane and UAV-Acquired NDVI Images for Site-Specific Nitrogen Application: Observations from Italy

Abstract: Defining the most profitable remote sensing platforms is a difficult decision-making process, as it requires agronomic and economic considerations. In this paper, the price and profitability of three levels of remote sensing platforms were evaluated to define a decision-making process. Prices of satellite, plane and UAV-acquired vegetation indices were collected in Italy during 2020 and compared to the economic benefits resulting from variable rate nitrogen application, according to a bibliographic meta-analys… Show more

“…Information about spatial variability derived from remotely sensed data was used to explore the correlation between several vegetation indices and grape yield [21]. Remotely sensed vegetation indices may be used to identify specific features of terroir and stress condition [22,23], especially considering their cost-effectiveness [24,25]. Proximal sensors are widely used in precision viticulture, and several tools exist to monitor physiological responses of vegetation [26] and yield [2].…”

“…Ultimately, using one or both depends on the tasks and the specific data to be obtained. In arboriculture, UAVs are a very practical tool presenting a medium-to-high performance for multiple applications [4][5][6][22][23][24][25][26]35,72]. With the high spatial and temporal resolutions that can be achieved, they allow the characterization of entire fields with high-quality images to analyze individual trees.…”

“…In the near future, improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) can be done by site-specific nitrogen fertilization based on remote sensing data from low-altitude (from unmanned aerial vehicles) or satellite derived imagery [53,54]. Such methods of improving NUE are very important, especially because of current circumstances including European Union Green Deal policy which assume reducing mineral nitrogen fertilization of crops in near future [55].…”
