Ecology of the invasive Asian clam Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774) in aquatic ecosystems: an overview

Abstract: The Asian clam Corbicula fluminea is one of the most invasive species in freshwater aquatic ecosystems. The rapid growth, earlier sexual maturity, short life span, high fecundity and its association with human activities makes C. fluminea a non-indigenous invasive species likely to colonize new environments. This species, originally distributed in Asiatic ecosystems, is now a common inhabitant of American and European freshwater habitats. The present paper reviews the information related to the life cycle, eco… Show more

“…Applying such findings to our results it was also possible that the higher river flows during 2009/2010 resulted in higher mortalities, negatively affecting bivalve populations and possibly imposing a serious threat to some species. C. fluminea, has a typical opportunistic life cycle (Sousa et al, 2008b(Sousa et al, , 2008d giving this species an advantage over the four native species concerning extreme climatic events, since it recovers more rapidly (Sousa et al, 2008a(Sousa et al, , 2008cIlarri et al, 2011). Extreme events are predicted to increase over the next few decades as a result of climate change.…”

“…This is a filtering species, and its biomass consists basically of carbon from phytoplankton (Vaughn and Hakenkamp, 2001). This species lacked natural enemies (e.g., parasites and predators) in the invaded areas and can filter huge amounts of water (Sousa et al, 2008), which probably explains its high biomass even in an environment with limited productivity.…”

“…In freshwater ecosystems, Corbicula fluminea sensu lato (a designation that certainly contains several species; see for example, Hillis and Patton, 1982) has been reported as one of the most invasive species because of its wide geographic distribution and high invasive success (reviewed in Sousa et al, 2008). This latter was mainly attributed to biological characteristics such as early maturation, high fecundity and excellent dispersal capacities through passive transportation of juveniles in water current or via aquatic birds.…”
