Ecology and Diversity of Diatoms in Kuttanadu Paddy Fields in Relation to Soil Regions, Seasons and Paddy-Growth-Stages

Abstract: This assessment of ecology and diversity of Diatoms in Kuttanadu, is continuation of the previous publications of Green-algae and Blue-green-algae of the same region; all the three investigations were carried out simultaneously. The unique Kuttanadu wetlands (90˚17'N to 90˚40'N; 760˚19'E to 760˚33'E), a well known 'Rice bowl' of Kerala, spread over 53,639 hectares, is located in Alapuzha District of Kerala, India. This wetland was once known for its high biodiversity, but currently severely affected by intensi… Show more

“…simplex in transition and swamp periods indicated shallow water environments, wet soils and marsh environments (Van de Vijver et al 2002, Lowe et al 2007, Torgan & Santos 2008. The great contribution of species of the order Naviculales in the transition period can be explained by these taxa being abundant in marshy environments as reported in the study of Vijayan & Ray (2016).…”

“…Several studies at global scales on paddy field ecology using diatoms have been conducted 5,6,[43][44][45] . In India studies on the day paddy field diatoms have been carried out from Kuttanadu Paddy fields (Kerala) 7 . Usually, paddy field diatoms are restricted to the paddy fields and are preserved in their sediments.…”

“…In India, the record of paddy field diatoms from the lake profile section is hitherto unavailable. However, few studies on the present day paddy field diatoms and their distribution in south India have been carried out in the Kuttanadu paddy fields (Kerala) 7 and in Rasipuram area (Tamil Nadu) 8 .…”

“…This review has concentrated on terrestrial algae (algae of soil and subaerial environments), and the literature on algae of the wetland paddy soils is not emphasized. Algae of wetland paddy fields is an already well‐explored theme (Chatterjee et al., 2017; Kaushik et al., 2019; Ramakrishnan et al., 2023; Vijayan & Ray, 2015), and such algae are primarily aquatic (Komal et al., 2021; Vijayan & Ray, 2015).…”
