Echogenicity of the Common Carotid Artery Intima–Media Complex in Stroke

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Grey-scale median of the common carotid artery intima-media complex (IM-GSM) characterizes the arterial wall composition and low IM-GSM is associated with an increased cardiovascular mortality in the elderly. We aimed to determine differences in IM-GSM between a cohort with cerebrovascular disease and a healthy cohort. Eighty-two healthy individuals (CTRL: 63.2±8.7yrs) and 96 patients with either stroke or transient ischemic attacks (CRVD: 68.6±9.8yrs) were studied. Common carotid artery intima-med… Show more

“…12 IM-GSM has also been reported to be a strong correlate of stroke. 22 A casecohort study from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) reported no significant association between IM-GSM and CHD, stroke, and CVD after controlling for CVD risk factors. 23 Taken together, data indicate that IM-GSM is a reliable indicator of subclinical atherosclerosis above and beyond CIMT and more importantly, IM-GSM is strongly associated with stroke and predictive of all-cause mortality.…”

“…The common carotid arteries were assessed non-invasively using a Doppler ultrasound machine with a high-resolution linear array transducer (SSD-5500 SV, Aloka, Tokyo, Japan) previously described elsewhere [ 25 ]. Briefly, subjects lay supine on an examination bed with the head turned ~45° away from the examined side.…”
