Echoes of a distant time: effects of historical processes on contemporary genetic patterns in Galaxias platei in Patagonia

Abstract: Interpreting the genetic structure of a metapopulation as the outcome of gene flow over a variety of timescales is essential for the proper understanding of how changes in landscape affect biological connectivity. Here we contrast historical and contemporary connectivity in two metapopulations of the freshwater fish Galaxias platei in northern and southernmost Patagonia where paleolakes existed during the Holocene and Pleistocene, respectively. Contemporary gene flow was mostly high and asymmetrical in the nor… Show more

“…Understanding processes shaping the genetic variation in species through space and time is crucial in various fields of biology, ranging from informing conservation decisions (e.g., Inoue, Lang, & Berg, ; Mukesh, Sharma, Shukla, & Sathyakumar, ) and unraveling the demographic history of species (e.g., Gong et al., ; Tsuda, Nakao, Ide, & Tsumura, ; Vera Escalona, Habit, & Ruzzante, ) to disentangling key evolutionary processes (e.g., Capblancq, Després, Rioux, & Mavárez, ). Investigating genetic variation through space has proven valuable to unravel the role of environment in genetic divergence (Björklund, Alonso, & Edelaar, ; D'Amen, Zimmermann, & Pearman, ).…”

“…Inspired by this work, many researchers have applied a similar approach to a wide range of nonmodel systems (e.g., refs. [30][31][32][33][34]. However, as with any approach to data analysis, phylogeographic model choice using ABC has limitations, and decisions about which models to include in the comparison set can be challenging.…”
