ECCO essential requirements for quality cancer care: Oesophageal and gastric cancer

Abstract: ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR QUALITY CARE: CONCLUSION: Taken together, the information presented in this paper provides a comprehensive description of the essential requirements for establishing a high-quality OG cancer service. The ERQCC expert group is aware that it is not possible to propose a 'one size fits all' system for all countries, but urges that access to multidisciplinary units or centres must be guaranteed for all those with OG cancer.

“…[3][4][5][6] Dysphagia, chest pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, asthenia, weight loss, fever, nausea, and vomiting are the most frequent symptoms, which worsen quality of life. 2,[7][8][9] Moreover, dysphagia can also dramatically reduce nutritional support and lead to malnutrition, anorexia, and dehydration. 10 Several effective options, such as intraluminal stents, brachytherapy, and endoscopic treatment of obstruction or stenosis with laser or cryotherapy, are available for symptom palliation.…”
