The aims of the study were to determine the rate of binge eating and examine the relationship between binge eating and coping in nonclinical adolescents. A total of 1913 adolescents completed the Bulimic Investigatory Test, Edinburgh, the Adolescent Coping Scale (ACS), the Youth Self-Report and additional questions regarding the binge-eating episodes. Of the total sample, 6.94% reported bingeing in the last 6 months. The adolescents who binge eat reported a more frequent use of Intropunitive avoidance and Introversion and a less frequent use of Positive-effortful coping compared with those who do not binge eat. However, when the effects of age and depression were controlled in the analysis, the groups only differed in the Positive and Intropunitive avoidance dimensions of coping. Training adolescents on how to cope with stress in a more constructive manner may be a possible strategy for the prevention of maladaptive eating patterns in adolescents.

OBJECTIVE-Self-esteem is considered to be importantly associated with both psychosocial states such as depression as well as physical health. There are no population-based studies that examine the association between self-esteem and mortality. The objective of this study was to assess whether low self-esteem was prospectively associated with increased risk of death in a population-based sample of Finnish men.METHODS-A sample of 2682 male residents of Kuopio, Finland were interviewed and followed prospectively as part of the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study (KIHD). Characteristics of the KIHD sample at baseline included self-esteem, measured by the Rosenberg ten-item scale, socioeconomic factors, behavioral risk factors, other psychosocial characteristics, and prevalent diseases. Mortality was ascertained through linkage to the Finnish national death registry. We assessed the relationship between self-esteem and all-cause mortality using Cox proportional hazards models.RESULTS-Low self-esteem was associated with a two-fold [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.0, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.3-3.2] increase in age-adjusted mortality. This relationship was partially explained by behavioral and socioeconomic factors, and prevalent diseases, and fully explained by other psychosocial characteristics (hopelessness, depression, cynical hostility, and sullenness). When adjusted for hopelessness alone there was no increased risk associated with low self-esteem (HR = 1.3, 95% CI = 0.8-2.2).CONCLUSIONS-This study found no association between self-esteem and all-cause mortality after adjustment for other psychosocial characteristics, primarily hopelessness. Our understanding of the observed relationships between some psychosocial factors and mortality may be improved by simultaneous measurement of multiple psychosocial domains, thus diminishing the potential for residual confounding.

Introduction:Body appearance is important in interpersonal relationships. Body composition analysis allows for the objective evaluation of a body, which contributes to a realistic view of the problem. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between individual parameters of body composition and self-esteem of appearance among female nursing students. Materials and methods:The study involved a group of 210 nursing students of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin (Poland). The diagnostic survey was conducted using The Body Esteem Scale, as well as a self-report questionnaire and individual body composition analysis performed using the Jawon Medical IOI 353 analyzer. Results: Most of the respondents rated their self-esteem at a low or medium level. Body composition analysis showed normal body weight in just over half of the respondents. Results for the body mass index were significantly different from the body composition analysis, and almost 71% of the surveyed students had normal weight. There was a correlation between protein level and weight control score (p = 0.000) and physical fitness (p = 0.038); 70% of respondents with fat levels above normal had low selfesteem as to their weight control, and 53% of respondents had low self-esteem of physical fitness. Professional activity was correlated with the self-esteem of body appearance. Conclusions: Nursing students are moderately satisfied with the image of their own body. The objective evaluation of body composition is based on detailed, impartial and reliable results of bioelectric impedance analysis. Women who care for their health while maintaining proper body composition are characterized by high self-esteem of their body. Self-esteem of the body may be affected by age and professional activity. Keywords: body image; body composition analysis; nursing students; subjective body esteem; objective body esteem. ABSTRAKTWstęp: W relacjach międzyludzkich ważne znaczenie ma wygląd zewnętrzny. Analiza składu ciała pozwala natomiast na jego obiektywną ocenę, która przyczynia się do realnego spojrzenia na występujące problemy. Celem pracy było ustalenie zależności pomiędzy poszczegól-nymi parametrami składu ciała a samooceną wyglądu wśród studentek pielęgniarstwa. Materiały i metody: Badaniami objęto grupę 210 studentek pielę-gniarstwa Pomorskiego Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Szczecinie. Metodą badawczą był sondaż diagnostyczny przeprowadzony za pomocą skali oceny ciała, formularz ankiety własnego autorstwa oraz indywidualne badanie składu ciała przeprowadzone na analizatorze Jawon Medical IOI 353. Wyniki: Większość respondentek oceniła swoją atrakcyjność seksualną na niskim bądź średnim poziomie. Na podstawie analizy składu ciała wykazano, że tylko u ponad połowy respondentek masa ciała była w normie.
