Abstract: Freedom, aim for encyclopedic coverage; others, such as David Mason's Revolution in East-Central Europe, fit the extraordinary events into a broader historical or geographic pattern. Gale Stokes's approach is to sharpen the focus, both in time and coverage. This makes his volume enormously useful, as well as readable, even if it is somewhat incomplete.
