Early-Onset Postirradiation Sarcoma of the Tongue after Pseudotumor Phase

Abstract: Radiation-induced sarcoma usually develops after an interval of more than 10 years from the completion of radiation therapy to the diagnosis of secondary sarcoma. However, the theory of radiation-induced transformation does not rule out postirradiation sarcomas with a short latency period. We experienced the case of a patient with postirradiation leiomyosarcoma of the tongue, which occurred 19 months after he had received chemoradiotherapy. Besides the short latency period, a pseudotumor stage developed betwee… Show more

“…Oral squamous cell carcinoma also represents more than 90% of all head and neck cancers. 1,18,22 In the current study, radiotherapy alone was used in 106 cases (86.9%), radiotherapy associated with chemotherapy in 11 cases; (9%) and radical surgery associated with radiotherapy in five cases (4%). The radiation therapy dose ranged from 65 to 155 Gy for head and neck treatment.…”

“…Certainly, those at WTC were exposed to a host of chemicals and carcinogens,15 16 which may have overwhelmed the dendritic cells leading to this uncommon tumour. The latency period of 10–15 years after exposure is certainly within the expected time frame 17. Moreover, the WTC Scientific Advisory Committee recommended that soft tissue sarcomas be considered as WTC-related conditions insofar as there was exposure to polychorophenols and their sodium salts, which are regarded as risk factors 18…”
