Early Growth Stage Characterization and the Biochemical Responses for Salinity Stress in Tomato

Abstract: Salinity is one of the most significant environmental stresses for sustainable crop production in major arable lands of the globe. Thus, we conducted experiments with 27 tomato genotypes to screen for salinity tolerance at seedling stage, which were treated with non-salinized (S1) control (18.2 mM NaCl) and salinized (S2) (200 mM NaCl) irrigation water. In all genotypes, the elevated salinity treatment contributed to a major depression in morphological and physiological characteristics; however, a smaller decr… Show more

“…Genetic variability, which is due to the genetic differences among individuals within a population, is the main aim of plant breeding programs because proper management of diversity can produce a permanent gain in the performance of the plant and can buffer against seasonal fluctuations [ 20 ]. Genetic variability among traits is important for breeding and in selecting desirable types.…”

“…Initiatives are also underway to improve soil health and address erosion and salinisation 120 . Reintroduction of traditional and other drought-resistant crops and plants that can withstand high salt concentrations are also being explored 313,[321][322][323][324] . Sophisticated technologies are also being deployed to improve agriculture such as satellite sensing and thermal imaging to monitor and enhance water use 314,325 , liquid nano clay treatments 314 , and hydrophobic sand 326 to improve moisture retention in agricultural soils.…”
