Abstract: Drought is a major constraint to oil palm plantation in many regions relying on rainfall. One strategy to overcome this problem is to develop drought-tolerant cultivars through screening and selection. Drought tolerance assessment based on growth and physiological traits provides an alternative approach for rapid screening especially in tree crops. The aims of this study were to determine the contribution of some growth and physiological parameters to drought response variation in oil palm seedling and to use … Show more

“…In the oil palm plantation industry, optimum growth and productivity are not achieved due to various factors, among which nutrient management and well-established nursery seedlings are crucial. Uniform and vigorous seedlings are a key component of improved oil palm production [33,46]. Therefore, improved nutrient management is necessary to achieve healthy and well-adapted seedlings [33].…”

“…Research by Zaher et al [3] showed that the characters of plant dry weight, plant wet weight, root and shoot length, tissue water content, and osmolyte accumulation were characteristics of osmotic stress tolerant citrus. In oil palm, observations of morphological physiological and biochemical characters have also been observed in screening drought tolerant characters, such as plant height, stem diameter, leaf number, root length and volume, wet weight and dry weight, proline content and ABA content [4,5]. The method that can be used as a reference in drought tolerant oil palm breeding is observation in production patterns during drought as well as observation in physiological aspects such as root development, stomata regulation, root absorption rate and efficiency of soil moisture extraction [1].…”

“…Drought tolerance character is not influenced by a single physiological trait, but it is influenced of several tolerance mechanisms during plant development [2]. Plant responses triggered by drought stress such as changes in photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll staining and biochemical accumulation are considered as effective markers for rapid observation in plants [3,4,5]. One method to observe plants response to drought in the nursery phase is the Fraction to Transpiration Soil Water (FTSW) method, where this method is based on observations of plant transpiration conditions [6].…”

“…The proline metabolism mechanism and scavenging abilities are well known, and they have been studied in herbaceous species, such as Arabidopsis (Hare et al, 2003), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (Shafiq et al, 2018;Ambreen et al, 2021), mung bean (Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek) (Posmyk & Janas, 2007), sweet corn (Wen et al, 2013), maize (Zea mays L.) (Karalija & Selović, 2018) or rice (Oryza sativa L.) (Singh et al, 2018), as is the case with proline seed priming (Kamran et al, 2009;Karalija and Selović, 2018). Meanwhile, the results of research on short-lived species do not reflect the mechanisms occurring in seeds and seedlings of long-lived orgasms, such as trees (Duangpan et al, 2018;Sigala et al, 2020). The complexity of the regulation of proline metabolism and numerous functions of this amino acid is the reason for the difficulties in improving plants of agronomic and forestry importance.…”
