Dynamics of vegetation structure in a fragmented landscape in Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: Considering that area and edge effects are the most important factors that lead to landscape changes from the fragmentation of terrestrial communities, the present study aimed to analyze changes in the structure of vegetation classes of a fragmented landscape. The methodology employed was based on a model of patch dynamics for the years between 1979 and 2015. The analysis was performed with quantitative (area, shape and edge effect) and qualitative (low declivity of the terrain, fire resistance and tolerance t… Show more

“…It plays an important role in the global biogeochemical and energy cycles (Hao et al, 2016). In terms of environmental protection, vegetation can prevent wind and sand erosion, slow soil erosion, and effectively prevent desertification (Salomao, Silva & Machado, 2019;Zhang et al, 2019a;Zhang et al, 2019b). In terms of the energy cycle, vegetation can effectively reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases, facilitate global carbon balance, and maintain the global climate stability (Ndehedehe & Ferreira, 2019;Servera Vives et al, 2014).…”

“…Areas of dense ombrophilous forest and campo rupestre in Conceição do Mato Dentro have been converted to pasture by the introduction of invasive exotic grasses such as Braquiaria decumbes (Salomão et al, 2018). This fact is worrisome since the region has a history of accentuated fragmentation, which when added to the conversion of dense ombrophilous forest and campo rupestre to pasture, further favors the loss of biodiversity (Salomão et al, 2019).…”

“…Vegetation transformation in the municipality of Conceição do Mato Dentro, caused structural evolution of the communities of campo rupestre (Cerrado) and dense ombrophilous forest (Atlantic Forest), mainly due to the creation of pastures. This, in turn, has led to more and more changes to the optimal conditions of survival and reproduction for native species, and an increase in invasive species adapted to the new conditions (Salomão et al, 2019). In addition, this type of anthropism can result in other environmental impacts in the area, such as annual burning since fire is still used as a tool to expand agricultural areas (Resende et al, 2017).…”

“…This widespread habitat-altering process can be observed throughout the entire Brazilian Atlantic Forest (Lira et al 2021), resulting in a large number of small and isolated forest patches, varying in shape, inserted into different types of matrices (Melo et al 2013). The effects of these processes in the forest patches found in these landscapesmainly a reduction of overall forest cover and high levels of fragmentationhave increased the similarity of vegetation structure and floristic composition within and between forest patches (Thier & Wesenberg 2016, Salomão et al 2019.…”
