Dynamics of a 3-DOF parallel mechanism used for orientation applications

Abstract: In the paper dynamic studies regarding the possibility to use a 3-DOF parallel mechanism for the TV satellite antenna orientation or sun tracker are presented. The advantage to use a parallel mechanism consists of their good stiffness, very high accuracy and their capability to manipulate heavy loads. The algorithms for the kinematic models are solved. Dynamic equations are obtained by using the Newton-Euler formalism in two steps. The first step is to determine the relations between the spherical joint reacti… Show more

“…A few years later, a combination of parallel and series types were proposed to develop a quite wide range of applications in 1990 [3]. Research about the platform has been since developed in many ways [4,5].…”

“…The power consumption of the parallel solar tracker is minimized by mass and inertia reduction. In Itul and Pisla, 21 kinematics and dynamics of a 3-DOF parallel mechanism for orientation purposes is described, mentioning the sun tracking as one of its possible applications. Same authors present a 2-DOF parallel mechanism with two linear actuators and a passive limb consisting of a universal joint.…”

“…In Mousazadeh et al, 8 a survey of the possible mechanism layouts for sun tracking is presented. This work shows that the most efficient device is the azimuth/elevation type: in Itul and Pisla 9 and Kulkarni et al, 10 it is possible to find two examples of this type of device. Alignment errors are generally more effective on the energy production of concentrator modules.…”

“…The azimuth and elevation angles are controlled by actuating two limbs (9,10) while the third one is passive (11); the actuation elements are applied to the lower arms attached to the fixed platform. Figure 2 shows the actuated angles b 1 and b 2 ; the azimuth (a) and elevation (z) angles define the orientation of the moving platform.…”
