Dynamical Steps that Bridge Piecewise Adiabatic Shapes in the Exact Time-Dependent Potential Energy Surface

Abstract: We study the exact time-dependent potential energy surface (TDPES) in the presence of strong nonadiabatic coupling between the electronic and nuclear motion. The concept of the TDPES emerges from the exact factorization of the full electron-nuclear wave function [A. Abedi, N. T. Maitra, and E. K. U. Gross, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 123002 (2010)]. Employing a one-dimensional model system, we show that the TDPES exhibits a dynamical step that bridges between piecewise adiabatic shapes. We analytically investigate t… Show more

“…The IWA calculations do not show multiple peaks in the components of the TDPES, as they have the simple shapes already observed 39 in the case of a single nonadiabatic crossing event. Interference effects are completely absent in the IWA; thus, we can clearly ascribe the appearance of the oscillatory structure of the TDPES to the relative phases of the BO nuclear wavefunctions.…”

“…This new feature of the exact TDPES resembles the dynamical step observed for single nonadiabatic events. 39 Even though the probability density distribution for the exact nuclear wavefunction perfectly matches the sum of the two individual probability density distributions for the IWA (upper right panel of Fig. 7), the peak is not formed in the latter case due to the independent character of the IWA dynamics.…”

“…A detailed analysis of the shape of the GD component was given here, while earlier work had focussed on the GI component. 57,58 In particular, we explained why the shape is a sigmoid, and why the step in the GD component largely cancels that in the GI component. The effect of the GD part of the TDPES was analyzed also under a different perspective, by pointing out the qualitative connection with the momentum adjustment in the TSH procedure.…”

“…The TDPES of the theory based on the exact factorization remains unaffected if compared to the BO case, up to within the first-order perturbation, as shown in Eq. (33). The vector potential, that is identically zero in the adiabatic treatment, becomes…”
