Dynamical instability of the electric transport in superconductors

Abstract: We develop a nonlinear theory of the electronic transport in superconductors in the framework of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation. We utilize self-consistent Gaussian approximation and reveal the conditions under which the current-voltage V(I) dependence (I-V characteristics) acquires an S-shape form leading to switching instabilities. We demonstrate that in two-dimensions the emergence of such an instability is a hallmark of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition that we have d… Show more

“…In disordered ALD deposited TiN films, these voltage jumps in V (I) occur at T ≃ T BKT , i.e. when α switches from 1 to 3 41 . Hence, we observe that the T BKT transition vanishes while T c remains non-zero.…”

“…Usually it is difficult to ensure very good thermal contact of a sample and a thermometer even when they are stuck together. Strongly non-linear current and the temperature dependence of the resistivity result in uncontrollable heating of the sample [41] and the I-V characteristics may acquire even an S-shape form [42]. Therefore, we believe that for unambiguous identification of the BKT transition in HTSC, simultaneous measurements of the resistivity both in the ab-plane and along the c-axis are necessary.…”

“…] and the GL coherence length was extracted to be ξ GL = 7.7 nm. Owing to the fact that l ξ GL λ L , where the London penetration depth λ L for disordered superconductors is typically hundreds of nanometers [52][53][54], the material is confirmed to be a bulk-like, dirty type-II superconductor. While for the perpendicular fields, a deviation from the empirical GL formula was observed where the curve has an upward curvature at low fields and saturates to a higher critical fields with weaker temperature dependency (fitting details see Supplementary materials, Supplementary Fig.…”
